Student Visa Process
Student Visa
(Study Permit) Guide
Steps to Apply:
Receive LOA from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
Letter of Admission from a Designated Learning Institution in Canada
Pay the Tuition fee
One year
Apply for a GIC account with a participating Canadian financial institution
(e.g., Scotiabank, CIBC, ICICI Bank Canada).
Transfer the required GIC amount (plus bank service fees) from your home country to the Canadian bank.
Financial Fund Proof: GIC and Pre-paid Tuition
The total financial proof required for a Canadian study visa application is the sum of one year's tuition fees plus one year's living expenses.
If a student has paid their first year's tuition fee and arranged a GIC for the required living expenses, they have effectively accounted for the two largest financial requirements.
The GIC certificate replaces the need for showing a bank statement for the living expenses portion.
The tuition fee receipt replaces the need for showing a bank statement for the tuition portion.
It is highly recommended to still include recent bank statements from the student or sponsor's account.
This provides a complete financial picture, shows the stability of the funds used, and demonstrates that a buffer for travel, initial settlement, or other expenses is available, which significantly strengthens the visa application. The bank statements would ideally show the movement of funds for the GIC and tuition payments.
